“Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That’s what little girls are made of.”
– Bethany Hamilton
We are starting something new at CrossFit Bullet Proof. We want our members to know that we recognize your hard work and the way that you exemplify what we believe a CrossFit athlete should be: mentally & physically strong, hard-working, resilient and a team player. Starting today, we will be featuring 1 or 2 athletes each month as the “Athlete of the Month” and give you the opportunity to read a little bit about who they are, where they’re at in their CrossFit journey, and what they want to get out of their experience at Bullet Proof.
To kick this off, we want to introduce you to Leia Buis!
Leia is a “proud 5 AM-er” three times a week, and works out from home the other two in addition to attending the Saturday community WOD when her schedule allows. Her coach, Taylor, describes her as being “encouraging, resilient and stronger than she has yet discovered.” Leia started CrossFit in November of 2015 and just wrapped up her first year of participating in the CrossFit Open! She came to CrossFit Bullet Proof because, like most of us, she “needed something different.” Leia had been working out at a globo-gym for roughly 5 years, wasn’t seeing the results she’d hoped for, and as she approached her 30th birthday she realized that she had never set a goal for her fitness journey, so she decided to try out CrossFit to change that. When asked about her biggest accomplishment, she first said that her overall fitness was a big accomplishment for her, but then cited her continued enthusiasm for the sport- “staying so annoyingly interested and enthusiastic about CrossFit and the benefits of every WOD”- and her fellow 5AM-ers can attest to that! Leia shows up every WOD with a smile on her face, even if it’s movements we all know might not be her favorite and she might not have gotten enough sleep the night prior.
Speaking of favorites- Leia is a big fan of squat cleans, she likes her “movies scary and her metal heavy,” and if you offer her a cheat meal, she prefers a cheeseburger or a cheese pizza.
Leia loves CrossFit Bullet Proof “because of the people, hands down.” She said, “everyone is so friendly and helpful. I especially love my fellow 5 AM-ers!”
Leia is one of our athletes that proves that this stuff works. The “constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity across broad time and modal domains” (definition of CrossFit) produces greater overall fitness, and the community behind it makes all the hard work that much more enjoyable. Every day she gets stronger, gains more confidence in herself & the movements, encourages her teammates and makes her coach proud. We are so thankful that she chose to try us out in November, and can’t wait to see where her CrossFit journey takes her!
